A Lesson from a Cat

A year ago, in the cold of winter, we took in this cat that had been hanging around our neighborhood. She had been living in cardboard boxes on the neighbor's back deck, and all the neighbors had been feeding her. Every time we arrived home in our driveway, she'd come running over to visit us, rub against our legs and eat-up all the attention she could get.

Shortly after adopting her, she showed us that she had been fooling us as her affection began to wane. She simply wanted a home and would do anything to get one! It was most unusual to me to have a cat that wasn't affectionate as our other three cats are tremendously spoiled, affectionate and needy. Sometimes, all I have to do is look at Polly and she runs off. Sometimes, however, she likes to hang around me and watch me as long as I don't touch her. She doesn't much like to be touched, but when she's sleeping, I pet her and she purrs.

Anyway, the lesson this cat has taught me is that I don't have to receive love to give love. Giving or receiving love, it's still Love.

Cats are funny creatures like that. My black cat was never affectionate either, but that changed as he got older and I switched him to moist food. Now he loves to be on our laps all the time. My husband says he's just sucking up because he wants his moist food, the good stuff.

If you do a google image search on Tuxedo cat you will be amazed how many are like her.

Polly sounds like she has...

CAT-A-TUDE !!!

Our cat Fred has an extreme
case of it. But we love him.

NinRose,

My husband thinks she'll become more affectionate when she's older. Right now she's about a year and seven months old. Strangely, she's very affectionate and playful toward our beagle - she adores him!

We free-feed our cats dry food, and then at 5:00pm every day the four of them split a can of moist food as a treat. (And if I'm ever a minute late, they let me know!)

How many cats do you have?

I'm not sure cats have that kind of human logic though, to suck up just to get something they want. Do you know Polly's background? Cats that were raised by only their mothers without human contact are more apt to be aloof with people, than those that had human nuturing from birth.

Oh, sorry. I have two cats.

Deb,

That's a good way to put it - "Cat-a-tude"!! I've never seen anything like it. I've heard some people over the years complain about the independence of cats and I never believed them until Polly showed up!

I looked through the pages of Stasia - her personality shines in those pictures. Does your daughter have other cats?

I don't know if this is common in Tuxedo cats, but Polly has a few whispy white hairs scattered throughout the black fur. I thought she'd outgrow that but I'm glad to see she didn't.

Hi NinRose,

I suffer a little bit of anthropomorphism with the cats!

I don't know much about Polly's background, except that she was a stray for about three weeks before we took her in. The vet agreed with my guess that she was about seven months old. A neighbor of ours has a male Tuxedo cat, and I am not sure whether or not he is neutered. When we took Polly in, she had a big gash across her nose, possibly from a cat fight. There is still a very faint scar. We took her to have her spayed, and after they opened her for the surgery, they determined she had already been spayed. (Maybe that's why she doesn't like me - I was the first face she saw when she woke up from that!)

What color are your cats?

My Spooky is solid black and my Sapphire is gray and she's half siamese. Her mother was pure siamese. She has all the temperment of a siamese, very demanding of attention. But now my Spooky has become the same way. He was a stray when we got him too. Sapphire wasn't, but he was.

How long have you had Spooky and Sapphire, and how old are they?

My cats are up there in yrs. Sapphire is 12 and Spooky is 11.

We got Sapphire when she was 6 weeks old, from the owners of her mother, the pure bread siamese. Spooky was 4 months old when we got him. He was a little Boston alley cat. My brother was living there and he wanted to get him off the street, so I said I would take him.

So you've been able to watch them grow up since they were kittens. :)
