Dream Journal Week of March 5, 2007

I had a dream several days ago that I never got around to posting. It's very short really, but I think may mean much more.

I was drinking out of a cup. I kept filling the cup over and over, drinking more and more, but my thirst was not quenched.

Spiritual thirst, perhaps?

Perhaps an emptying of the cup is in order?

Hmm ... deep down we are somehow convinced that we are incomplete, and that our fulfillment depends on acquiring / getting / obtaining what is missing ... overlooking what is already present, in the core of our being, and has never been missing ...

Franz Kafka put it beautifully, I think:

Life's splendour forever lies in wait about each one of us in all its fullness, but veiled from view, deep down, invisible, far off. It is there, though, not hostile, not reluctant, not deaf. If you summon it by the right word, by its right name, it will come.

I know, it's there inside of me already and what I'm looking for has already been found. I can comprehend that. However, it's the experience. I don't want the experience to end, and yes, I know that wanting is a force that pushes against the flow of the goal. So, I'll just sit. And breathe. Listen to the white noise from the air units, the monitors, the voices in the room. Experience. :)

Nice to meet you, Rudi. I took a look at your blog. Not bad!

I am pretty sure what we are talking about here is NOT an experience. All experiences, even the most sublime, even those had by the most enlightened human beings this planet has ever seen, come and go. Read this.

What you are really looking for is that which is behind all experiences, deeper than any experience and beyond any desire for experience - read this; that is where lasting peace is found - read this.

And yes, you already know it. How couldn't you? It is the most intimate aspect of you.

Rudi, the entity behind the experience is the being. Something is. In order to be an experience, there has to be an experiencer, right? Even if experiences come and go, there is the experience, and for there to be an experience, there must be something experiencing it.

If you come back to read this, Rudi, don't worry. I'm not trying to tell you what is. I'm simply thinking out loud. It's the thinking that messes me all up in the first place. Must find blank mind!

Yes, but pure Being is NOT an 'entity', and NOT 'something' - it's the nothingness, the emptiness, behind and in the core of everything. NOR is it an experience - in pure Being there is no experienCER, no experienCED and no experienCE. Being is deeper than that.

If you come back to read this, Rudi, don't worry. I'm not trying to tell you what is.

You 'telling me what is' doesn't worry me in the slightest, trust me ... :-)

I think it's more that we believe our thoughts, or that we believe that we are our thoughts (and not so much the existence of thoughts as such) that 'messes us up' ... after all, it seems all enlightened human beings continue to have thoughts, it's just that they see them for what they are and are not limited by them.

Hi Rudi, from what I gather, you're saying that there is no entity that is a being. The only (no)thing that is is the action of being, or the verb being. But isn't Being something, even if it is just being? Being is not nothing.

I thought (who would've guessed) last night that if I could count the number of thoughts I have in any minute, they'd amount to 20 or more.

If the cup keeps refilling there is more to drink. Drink until you are satiated. The mystery will stop filling the cup when your thirst is truly slaked. At that point, thirst queched, you'll feel refreshed and the solid food will arrive.

I've been feeling more refreshed and awake than ever before. I'm so alive lately. Maybe because I have so much spiritual drink, and I keep taking in more and more. If this phase is only the drink, I wonder what will happen when the food starts filling me.

That which the mind thinks of as 'nothing' (and which is therefore always overlooked), in direct experience is recognised as its precise opposite - the totality of all there is. But few people are willing to experience nothingness / emptiness (i.e. death) whole-heartedly; i.e. 'be' emptiness and nothing else; 'be' nothing and nobody; just 'be'.

Suzanne Segal described what she discovered when, just for a split second, she was 'nothing': "The infinite emptiness I knew myself to be was now apparent as the infinite substance of everything I saw".

There is NO WAY you can work this out in your mind.
