The Ego is like a cloud;
it blocks the Sun
from shining on what
needs Light to Be.

(P.S. (update) - I just realized that I did not properly center the image. Noticing such things, I think, is another trait of the ego. Perhaps, by refusing to center it, I am learning acceptance.)

Sophia,
I think the ego is not entirely bad. I think it's like a gushing oil well – it needs to be tamed to be useful. Which really means one must adopt modesty.
I like to think of the Global Brain as systems being developed and then brought into the network (web) just like a gushing oil well is tamed and fed into the network of pipelines. It all keeps building and building.

I feel, the Ego is a great great treasurer of the human being and universe as well.
Ego (Selfhood) can demolish the magic of this world. Human Mind/Ego is beyond the universe. All the universe (Time n Space) is just like a dust partical in the world of Ego (Self hood).
I would say there is nothing in the univers only Ego.
Hi Don,
I am not quite certain yet if the ego is good or bad, but it seems impossible to dispose of completely. From what I've seen so far, the more the ego is at least in submission, the better. In submission, it still exists - it just knows its not the boss.
As far as the Global Brain is concerned, I haven't been able to separate humans from other creatures or things. So as far as I see it, humans are a subset of the Global Brain, just as cockroaches, zebras and paramecium are. Except, it's not just a Global Brain, it's a Universal Brain. But I do see the point that Global Brain enthusiasts are trying to make. I just see a bigger picture.
Hi Eyeshare,
You have a unique perspective on this concept. I am glad you bring it up so we can see another point-of-view.
I want to make sure we're both speaking about the same definition of Ego. As you see it, is the Ego collective of all humans? The way I see it, is that Ego is individual - it is an illusion that keeps us feeling separate. I think that Ego arises from one man's mind. In other words, it is my mind or brain that creates the ego and hence causes me to perceive that I am separate from everything.
In other words, how I see it is that Ego is perception of the human mind (mind uses the brain to perceive - the brain that sees, tastes, touches, smells, hears.) Based on these perceptions from the five physical senses, we think we are separate entities.
I would like to know more about your perspective. My perspective is of course only an opinion of my Ego and based on intellectual knowledge. :) I am just a grasshopper, and I don't know that intellect has a role of importance in the Big Scheme of Things.
Sophia,
I would say in some sort of spiritual sense the global brain/mind is universal. But a more practical way to define it is it exists only where there is communication between intelligent beings. So at this point it would just be Planet Earth, plus some forays out into the solar system. As we contact other civilizations in our galaxy via SETI it would spread throughout it. Whether it spreads throughout the Universe is an open question, for the time required to communicate becomes so long it perhaps is never done.

I feel, It is concerning with the relative topic so I would like to share it with you, its bit lengthy but I hope you'd find it interesting to contemplate.
Well, as my teacher "Iqbal" defines.
Question:
WHAT am I? Tell me what “I” means.
What is the meaning of “travell into yourself”?
Answar:
EGO is the amulet for the protection of the universe.
The first ray of its essence is Life.
Life awakens from its sweet dream,
Its inside, which is one, becomes many.
Neither it develops without our expansion,
Nor do we expand without its development.
Its inner core is a shoreless sea,
The heart of every drop is a tumultuous wave.
It has no inclination to rest,
Its manifestation is nothing but individuals.
Life is fire and egos are like its flames;
Like stars they are (both) stationary and moving.
Without going outside, it looks towards others;
Though in company, is yet in privacy.
Just see its self- meditation,
It develops out of the trodden earth.
Hidden from the eyes, it is in tumult,
It is constantly in search of adornment.
It is in perpetual activity through its internal ardour,
As if it is at war with itself.
The world gets order through this strife of the ego!
A handful of dust becomes translucent through strife.
From its ray, nothing comes into being save egos,
From its sea, nothing appears save pearls.
The earthly garb is a veil for Khudi,
Its appearance is like the rising of the sun.
In the innermost heart of ours is its sun,
Our dust is illumined through. its potency.
You ask to be informed about "I," and
What is meant by "travel into yourself."
I informed you about the relation of body and so
Travel into yourself and see what "I" is.
To travel into self?-It is to be born without father and mother,2
To catch Pleiads from the edge of the roof;
To hold eternity with a single stroke of anguish,
To see without the rays of the sun;
To obliterate every sign of hope and fear,
To sunder the river like Moses,3
To break this spell of sea and land,
To split the moon with a finger.4
So to return from this experience of the spaceless world,
That it is within his heart, and the world in his hand.5
But it is difficult to unravel this secret:
Here "seeing" is valuable and "describing" worthless.
What can I say about "I" and its brilliance?
It is manifest from the Qur'anic text, "We proposed."6
The heavens are in terror of its glory,
Time and space are in its grip.
It sought refuge in the heart of man,
And has fallen to the lot of this handful of dust.
It is distinct from the other and yet related to it,7
Is lost within itself and yet conjoined with the other.
What kind of aspiration this handful of dust has
That its flight is. beyond the limitations of time and space.
It is in prison8 and yet free! What is this?
It is the lasso, the prey, and the hunter! What is this
There is a lamp within your heart;
What is this light which is in your mirror?
Don't be negligent, you are its trustee,
What folly that you do not look within your self!
Hi Don,
The global brain sounds like it's a technological idea based on using technology to make contact with other humans. Am I right?
The global brain could be useful in bringing the world together.
Hi Eye,
From what Iqbal is saying - if I'm comprehending this correctly - is that the ego is actually useful, that one should keep the ego intact yet also search within for the Self.
This idea is new to me. In a way, it's kind of like what we say here that one can "have their cake and eat it, too."
Thanks for sharing. It's always a pleasure to read your contributions.

It's the result of us building communication systems spanning the globe.
This in and of itself should achieve a configuration for the Earth like a giant brain, or more properly, a single living organism.
Nothing would bring the Earth together better than if it becomes a single living organism. An organism cares for the parts of its body.
