A 19-year old Saudi Woman....

Saudia Arabia has succeeded in adding to my recent displeasure with the Middle East. I have tried so hard to be a Pollyanna, loving everyone, being open-minded about different cultures and religions, but today I have been pushed too far. I absolutely cannot tolerate some of the Middle East's Islamic men's rule against women. These disgusting acts have tainted Islam.

A 19-year old gang-rape victim was originally sentenced to 90 lashes, because, before the event took place, she was meeting in a car with a male who was not her relative. She appealed the decision, and now, they've more than doubled her sentence because they claim she was using the media to her advantage! She is to receive 200 lashes and six months in prison.

This is just as ridiculous as flogging a woman because she allowed her students to name a teddy bear "Mohammad".

To all misogynistic and sadistic men in the Middle East (and only these types): GET A LIFE! GROW UP! You are like little boys on the playground! You have no idea how absurd and preposterous your behavior is. The only thing it proves is that you are shaking at the knees at the very thought of letting a woman use her intellect freely in your country, because you fear she would be your better.

AMEN!

And Sophia, thanks for saying so!

Absolutely proof about the pudding, bad taste means bad pudding, need better ingredients, better recipe, better lots of things, overhaul and rebuild, may their population REBEL!

Hi Jim,

Thanks.

There aren't too many things that make me angry in this world, but the unfair treatment of women in the Middle East is one of them. I want to kick and scream because the men there cannot see what is so obvious, that women are as deserving of freedom as they are. Everyone else these days seems to be getting it. Why can't they?

The mystery of the middle east, why those adult people put up with all that crap! That too is a mystery of Islam. Thanks for being angry, thanks Sophia for voicing it!

Very good to read your words on this!

The news is so "neutral"...

I've read in a couple religion's Scriptures that a person who refuses to obey God is insuring that they'll do ever worse things.

And, I don't really need to say this to you, my dear, but fanatic Muslim sins parading as holiness is Insane!

Yes, but the American and British governments prop up the dictatorial Saudi regime, which is therefore hardly representative of the Middle East, since the American and British governments interfere with the governments of the other Muslim countries.

"Using the media to advantage" means "getting international publicity against the injustice" - which of course the government won't like one bit. I don't know how separate the judiciary is in Saudi from the government. I should think not much.

I don't think this is about misogynistic men, Sophia, but politics - like the other case of the teddy bear in Sudan. It is same kind of politics as in US where certain issues are picked on and the gestures made are for internal and not international consumption.

There is a fear amongst the imams and rulers and extremist underground organizations in those middle-eastern countries that they will become infected with the immorality of the West - I don't just mean sexual immorality of course, if indeed at all. The immorality is in the concentration of power.

I think few in the USA and very few of the common people can realize the basis of what enrages its enemies. the same blindness of course exists in the common people in every country. By common people I do not speak disparagingly. It is normal and natural that most people will not think for themselves. But instead of cleaving to the folklore handed down from their grandparents, they now believe the more sinister folklore handed down from business and government pursuing their own agenda against the interests of the people.

Blimey, I become more anarchist every minute! If you don't hear from me I may have been arrested under the prevention of terrorism act and detained for up to 28 days.

Love, Vincent.

Sophia, Vincent describes the reality of human to human govt to populace relations, full of complications of psychological/spiritual warfare invented and realized as real by people, not by God, but always contrivances of people, and these contrivances of internal manipulation against an enemy are real, as real as lashes on skin!

An individual such as yourself does have to speak against direct crimes that are publicized even in this ugly spirit of population manipulation, but also remember the reality we humans have to live in, don't make one evil a saint over another, but call out each one as their evil.

Islam practises stoneage behaviours everyday, not simply once in a great while, and they are always far far from 'liberal' humanbeings, so too would be christians in the usa if they could be, stoning and killing gays and so on, they are always one step from that and seek to have such power in the near future.

Likewise many variations of Jews can't wait for such power,

just goes to show ALL HUMAN reality, not just Saudi, but the reality of the mentality of humanity in general.

This mentality is all to be against in hopes of elevation, amen.

I agree with you, Sophia. This behavor is totally unacepptable anywhere in this world. Some men think, based on their "religion" that they own the world. And that is BS capital letters. I have 4 sisters and would never ever want this to happen to any on them. These people would even allow it to happen to thier sisters and mothers, based on "religion" of course.

Alex,

How true! I don't know what the Koran says about how to treat women, but if everyone still lived life according to these holy books, or treating them literally, then we'd all still be walking around wearing loin cloths.

Christianity, for instance, has already seen a lot of progress in the way they treat and view women. Take a look at these sexist verses, for instance:

Corinthians 14:34 - Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

Ephesians 5:22 - Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

This one is my favorite:

Timothy 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

Silence? What's that? HA!

Timothy 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

Bad things are done in the name of religion. But at least the west has begun to make corrections.

Jim said...

Bravo again Sophia! You are right, some correction is better than none! Let's hear it for more!

These people have had their traditions a lot longer than we have had ours.
What I am always confused by is how all religions fail to allow for correction and alignment.
Until they do, I'll stick to my own beliefs.

Well said, Sophia! Everyone should respect women. They are our muses and mothers. Violence against women is wrong anywhere, anytime.

Jim,

I remember when I used to work at a restaurant when I was in high school. One of the waitresses had a boyfriend that abused her terribly. I always wondered what she saw in him, and I used to have daydreams of walking up to him and telling him how it is.

Somehow I was lucky enough to be born in this country. Not every woman can say the same thing. When I'm feeling unpatriotic because of the war and other current events, I just remember that I'm free.

In my lifetime I hope that this world sees a change in these countries that treat their women unfairly. If I live a long life, that gives the world about... let's see.... 60 or more years. Can they get it done?

Sophia said...

Goatman,

I think those that are caught in tradition are the ones that need the most change. Everyone always talks about "sticking to tradition", but to me, the word "tradition" is kind of frightening. Breaking out of tradition is a sign of growth and movement towards perfection, while perfection of course can never be achieved, it at least is something to aim for.

This behavior towards women in the Middle East makes it difficult for me to enjoy receiving wisdom from their holy books, because I can not help but be reminded of the unfairness.

I've always been tolerant and open-minded about other religions and cultures but these instances with the teddy bear and this young girl are really testing me. It's putting a new darker light on the Middle East, even though it's been going on like this forever there.

I feel like I don't know what to think or feel anymore. Maybe this is why I usually avoid the news. It just confuses me.

Cookie,

(I like your new name. *grin*)

Thank you for saying so. You are a true gentleman.

Hi Jon Be Me,

I apologize but I overlooked your statement. That is why I'm responding to you out of turn.

Yes, it abhors us to imagine this type of action towards our mothers or sisters, or in my case, me! What would life be like for me were I born in Saudi Arabia, for instance. I would have to commit suicide for sure. I do not see "real love" in the middle east. I do not see unconditional love there. In that place, I would die unhappy, and I'd be a broken spirit.
